Do You Know What the 3 Piece Rule Is?
Diane Pollack
It is a simple way to make your outfits more stylized. Use the 3 piece rule when you have a basic top and bottom. If you have a basic dress, it will become the 2 piece rule. This rule does not apply to ornate, highly designed-items.
OK so, you have a basic top & bottom outfit, add a third piece to make it look more stylized and bring the outfit together. This third piece can be a piece of clothing, such as a jacket, cardigan, or vest or it can also be an accessory such as a belt, necklace, or scarf. Shoes and bags are generally excluded from the third piece unless they are statement pieces.
*Now I can't say that every third piece you add will be ideal, as what you add may also depend on colors, necklines, and proportions (to be detailed in future insider news). But this is the first step in taking a basic Blah outfit and going from FINE 2 FAB.
Often a 4th piece can also be added as long as it doesn't compete with the third piece.
What if this lady were just wearing the beige coat, with no accessories? Kind of Meh right? The 3 Piece Rule to the rescue: making her look stylized.
