The Power of Color

Diane Pollack

Last week I knew I had a long day ahead, with multiple activities including some time sitting in Starbucks with my laptop and a video shoot with Nordstrom.

The day before, I had been running around in heels for a big personal shopping appointment that was frankly exhausting. The next day, I just wanted to feel comfortable. But I always make a special effort to find a special dressier outfit for my video shoots. The struggle between wanting to dress up for the video and feel comfortable for the long day was real.

Then I had a thought. Did I really need to dress up for the video, or just wear something that I thought I looked and felt good in, that could also be comfortable?

Running around over the weekend, I had worn a BRIGHT yellow sweater, skinny jeans and snakeskin booties and felt cute and comfortable. Why not? I duplicated the outfit for my long day and this is what happened...

I was in Starbucks and sat down at a table with my laptop. The person across the long communal table greeted me "Diane". It was someone I knew from many, many years back.

Do you know what I thought when I left there? Thank goodness, I looked and felt cute in my bright yellow sweater. After all, this is how the person is going to see me after many years. Don't I want to feel like I looked good?

You never know when you are going to run into someone that you want to look good for. Don't regret what you looked like.

What happened later at the video shoot? I rocked it out, just as well as when I wear my other more dressed up outfits because I still felt good.

Here is the thing. Color makes me feel vibrant and I always get many compliments when I wear it. If you are able to figure out which colors work best for you, I assure you, you will get many compliments and feel vibrant too.

But that means you have to step out of your comfort zone of black and or darks and other neutrals. Know your go-to colors. They may not be bright Yellow, Orange and Fuchsia like mine are. They may be pastel or more classic red or blue or green. What makes you look and feel vibrant?

I invite you to try it. If you are squeamish about color, I recommend starting in small doses. What about a pretty color scarf near your face or a bright lipstick to perk up your dark outfit?

Try it and let me know what you think. I would love to hear your comments.
