The Lost Season

Diane Pollack

What a strange season this has been.

The other day I looked in my closet to discover a bright floral blazer that I had purchased in January or February. I was really looking forward to wearing it in the spring when it was still cool out but the bright floral print screamed spring. Well, that was a missed opportunity and it still hangs in my closet with the tags on.

I know many of our spring and even summer wardrobes will go unworn this year as many of our in-person opportunities have been canceled or diminished. With the start of phase 1 opening in NYC, I am bringing you (way later than ever and a much-abridged) spring/summer trend presentation.

I always start my presentation of trends with my coined quote that “trends are suggestions and not mandates”. I want you to be in the know and from there you can make decisions if any of the trends resonate with you to either fill in a hole in your wardrobe or to simply make you feel great when you wear it.

Matching sets. Often in prints, a top with a matching bottom of skirts, pants, or shorts. The perfect way to look effortlessly put together.

Jumpsuits, which used to be considered a more trendy item, is seeping into the everyday wear of many. For the warmest of weather, the jumpsuit morphs into a romper.

Probably the biggest trend of the season is volume, which shows up in so many ways: shoulders, sleeves, oversized dresses and voluminous skirts, wide-leg pants and culottes.

Design details such as ruffles, tiers, and smocking are rampant and often nod to a bohemian look, as well as rouching, which is often reminiscent of the 80’s glam styles.

Last year there was big talk of biker shorts (which frankly never really took off). This year the Bermuda short is new and I think will have more mass appeal.

In prints, leopard and cheetah are forever cool, for summer, zebra takes over. Tropicals, ethnic and geo prints are always great this time of year. And don’t forget the trendy tie-dye and ombre in all-new iterations.

For accessories, raffia is big for espadrilles and straw bags. Platform heels continue (yay, my favorite) and the bucket hat is new.

Yes, I could go on, but I wanted to give you some top trends, especially those that may be more understandable.

As always, I am here to help. Let me shop digitally for the holes in your wardrobe or the new items that will just really make you happy to have. : )

Shopping with me via Nordstrom is a complimentary service.

Ps- if nothing else, you still want to look good for those zoom calls.
