The Beauty Edit 2024
Diane Pollack
It's been a while and I thought the best way to start off the new year would be with a fresh take on beauty. Now beauty is not my thing, but goes hand-in-hand with fashion and can really help get the new year off to a fresh start. Feeling empowered in your look is the start to crushing all your goals.
Fortunately, I was able to get the advice of a real beauty expert, Jill Harth. And when I say real beauty expert, I mean someone who does makeup and hair for newscasters, photoshoots, brides and so much more.
Check out our conversation.
DP: Peach Fuzz is Pantone's color of the year. Why is knowing the Pantone Color of the Year relevant?
JH: It’s important to know as it will affect the choices you will have when you want to purchase clothes and makeup and it’s what you’ll be seeing in all forms of media. Incorporating a new color into your life is how you can look and feel like you’re keeping up with the times. It urges everyone to make changes in their look and not get stuck in a beauty rut. I use it as a way to nudge clients to play a little. A new lipstick in the hottest color is a fun and inexpensive way to look “of the moment."
Peach Fuzz is a pretty, understated, light shade. I recommend it as a sweep of eye color across the lids. It’ll highlight any eye color and make them look fresh, but I find that blue-eyed women really will love the “pop” that a peach tone gives. If a light peach is too light for you everyone can find a shade of Peach that will bring warmth, youth, and elegance to your face.
Deeper tones of peach blush will warm up and sculpt your face. A very light Peach blush can act as a highlighter when applied to the top of your cheekbones. Deeper shades of peachy pink make absolutely beautiful blushes that will light up your face. Plus, I find that a peachy pink blush is flattering to everyone! Cream peachy blushes can be used on cheeks and lips.
JH: I like a seasonal color story update. The idea is to reinvigorate your look. Even if you change just one cosmetic product to start, it will update your look. A peachy Lip gloss is pretty alone and very fresh but don’t forget to outline your lips with lipliner. It’s a must for giving your lips shape and more texture for your lipstick to stick to.
Besides using monotone shades of peach on all your main facial features, (eyes, lips, cheeks), I like to do contrasts for more drama. How about adding a dark navy blue liner to apply over your eyeshadow? It’ll give more emphasis to your eye color. I also like deep green eyeliners and bronzes with peach. Or for a bolder look, I would build it up more with A cornflower blue or navy blue in your eye crease will keep more contour and shape to your eyes. Or if you don’t like playing up your eyes, use a darker shade of peach on your lips with a Peach tone highlighter all over your face. If you find that peach doesn’t look good on your skin tone in general but you want to be on trend, stick to peach eyeshadows and contrast your lips with shades of warm reds or pinks.
For beautiful, real-life skin: the trend is radiant skin. A little shine is good. It’s youthful and fresh. You’ll achieve it by using a sheer Mineral tint with some glow in it. I like luminance to a face. Avoid flat, matte, and heavy foundations unless you want to look older.
For hair, I’m seeing more Strawberry Blonde shades than I have ever seen before. A gorgeous shiny glaze of color with a peachy undertone will add an angelic glow and outrageous shine to your hair. Coordinating your lips and nail color is a classically chic touch.
