I am addicted

Diane Pollack

I just love it when I buy an item because I think it is cool, I wear it for years and then it shows up as a trend.

For instance, my friend Sima designed a tiered fringe jacket years ago that I always get compliments on. And then a few years ago fringe was everywhere and the jacket became trendy.

Then there is the silver metallic leather jacket I bought a million years ago at a Vivienne Tam sample sale. It was just a cool jacket that I was smart enough to hold on to and wear regularly throughout the years.

Fast forward to current times and metallic leathers have become trendy and this has become my ADDICTION! I want everything possible in silver metallic.

In retrospect, It is no surprise that I chose silver leather yarmulke for my wedding 16 years ago.

So the thing is, you can’t keep buying the same thing and have a wardrobe full of silver metallic leather unless…

Here is the key to feeding your addiction without purchasing multiple unnecessary items in your wardrobe.

So as silver metallic became a trend (in both leathers and denim) I wanted it ALL. I bought a cocktail dress, puffer, moto jacket, and a denim skirt. My shoe collection includes sneakers, pumps, sandals and booties.  Oh yes and, I have had multiple silver handbags throughout the years; also before they became trendy.

The last item that I had to really think about before buying was another jacket. This one was a silver denim-style jacket. Similar in weight to the leather blazer. Here is what I reviewed and why I decided I could own it too.

1)     The denim jacket is cropped, and the blazer covers my rear.

2)     The denim jacket has a boxy fit, and the blazer is fitted and nipped at the back waist

3)     The denim jacket is casual, and the blazer is more elevated.

All of this saying it was OK to purchase, not redundant.

So you may be saying “Metallic leathers and denim are not my thing, so who cares what Diane owns?” The point here is how you can assess things that you may be addicted to so that you don’t end up with redundancies in your wardrobe.

Believe me, I have worked in so many clients’ closets that have multiple items with no differentiating factors. And often these items are black pants or black boots.  Are you now saying “Oh yes, that sounds more like me?”

For pants, you should consider the fabric and leg shape. to see if there is enough reason to have the various options. For boots, you should review the heel, height, and shape, as well as, the shaft height.   If the pants or boots have any special design details or trim, that is a great differentiating factor.

This type of assessment goes for things you already own that you could possibly get rid of duplicates, and for things you want to purchase and struggle to figure out if you really need it because you have something similar.

These are examples that I hope will be helpful for you. And if you still need help, please reach out. I would be thrilled to aide in your stylempowerment :)
