Why I have never given myself a Closet Rejuvenation

Diane Pollack

It’s a little funny, don’t you think? Closet rejuvenation is the foundation of what I do, yet I’ve never actually given myself one.

Have you ever noticed how the smallest things can pile up and turn into big projects? Like when you toss your clothes on a chair at the end of the day, and before you know it, the pile is staring at you for a week (or longer)?

This of course could happen with anything not just clothes—it’s a project waiting to happen.

Here is a non-clothes example. My husband used to let mail pile up in a messy stack. Some opened, some unopened, some just junk. Eventually, it became this giant mountain of paper he had to sit down and tackle. Thankfully, we’ve got a system in place now, and things have definitely improved.

I’m sure there are a million examples of things we put off and leave lying around, only for them to transform into a project that we’d rather avoid but have to deal with eventually.

So, here’s the easy answer: If you’re too tired to put your clothes away right when you take them off, I get it. But if you just take two minutes the next morning to put them away, it’s done in no time and doesn’t become a big project.

The same goes for mail. If you don’t open it immediately, just set aside 5 minutes that day or the next to sort through it—toss the junk (excuse me, recycling), and sort what’s important. Now, it’s out of the way.

Simple, right?

Now how can we implement this in our closet?

This is exactly how I approach my closet. If I pull something down for the season or wear it once and think, “I’m done with this,” it goes straight into the giveaway bag. Takes two seconds, then when the bag gets full, it’s gone. Rinse and repeat.

Of course, there are those pieces that you’re not quite sure about. I get that too. Not everything is black and white. Like I remember having these black boots—the zipper broke, and they were my go-to pair. When I replaced them, I picked a trendier style. The old ones weren’t necessarily outdated, but it wasn’t till they broke that I realized I preferred something newer. There wasn’t a bold flashing light that had said “Needs to be replaced and updated” before it broke.

I’ll admit it—I like being organized (whether it’s with to-do lists or in my closet) to feel organized in my life. I’m the type who gets rid of things right away when I’m done with them. I don’t let returns sit around, and if I borrow a book and finish it, I like to return it immediately.

And yes, I love clothes and styling outfits—it’s a priority for me!

But maybe you’re not the type who feels the urgent need to organize or declutter. Maybe your closet isn’t at the top of your to-do list (though, wouldn’t it be nice if it were magically organized, with only clothes and outfits you absolutely love to wear?).

That’s exactly why I do what I do. I’m here to help if this isn’t your thing, if you need a little push, or if you’re not sure what to keep and what to toss. I can also offer guidance on outfits that make getting dressed feel easy and effortless.

If you need help, don’t hesitate to reach out. Now, if someone could help me with my taxes, that’s an area I don’t have an interest in tackling! 😊
